Project Overview
In an effort to further promote the Shannon Region and following the successful completion of the North Tipperary pilot project, Shannon Broadband Limited in conjunction with Shannon Development and Local Authorities are currently administrating a GPS project.
Addressing the deficiencies in POI information available for the Shannon Region on mapping platforms, the project will make >1000 POIs available. It incorporates the collection of both business and tourism Points of Interest (POIs). These POIs will be made available to mapping providers for wide distribution across Sat Navs and various mapping platforms.
Points of Interest (POI)
A Point of Interest (POI) is specific point location that may be of interest to somebody. There are hundreds of categories of POIs such as attractions, activities, accommodation, services, ATMs, Restaurants, Companies, Bus Stops, Playgrounds, etc. etc.
Sat Navs display a menu option to select a desired POI by category or location name. You are then guided by the sat nav to the desired location. Similarly a POI can be selected in an electronic map, the precise location is displayed with an option of directions. The user is provided with vital information, the POI name, address and contact details.
